This manhole cover submission is designed to highlight the importance of the technology industries to Vancouver’s economy such as software engineering, digital media, computer games, etc.
There is a spiral design of binary computer code. Decoded it reads:
“Why are manhole covers round?”
This is a famous interview question that many technology employees will have been asked during their interviews. The purpose of the question is to help see how potential employees come to understand the reasoning behind everyday objects, and understand their thought patterns.
The design highlights the bridge between the high technology industry and the foundation of our city – the pipes and sewers, which provide the base in the city for these technology companies and employees to thrive.
The design is a draft to convey the idea – a final version would be designed to have the text perfectly fit the form of the cover, with spaces for the holes, etc.
