This submission for the sanitary manhole cover is designed to remind people of the direct connection between their actions and their environment. In this image, we see a representation of a photograph of a stream on Vancouver Island surrounded by the message "WE ARE ALL ON THE LAND". The intention is to remind people that in spite of the roads and houses and architecture that cover the surface of out landscape, we live in nature, as part of the ecosystem and despite our different backgrounds we are interconnected. Thus we have a responsibility to be mindful about our actions. The text art layer is included for functional reasons, to provide traction and break up large solid areas, and for aesthetic reasons, as a continued exploration in a body of work that literally teases apart the sensory, symbolic and emotional components of images.
